Sea Floor - Sounding the Depths

Description:
  Imagine that it is the year 1607, and you are charged with finding a channel in Powhatan’s River, later to be named the James, that is deep enough to navigate upriver. Take soundings of the bottom, construct a bathymetric chart, and mark the channel. Extend your learning by making a shoebox model of another potential channel in the river. Assess your learning with a 5-item quiz.

  • Shoebox or craft box with lid. (Box must be at least 6 inches wide, 10 inches long and 4 inches high. If the box is taller than 4 inches high, cut it down to 4 inches)
  • 1/4 inch art foam sheets or pasteboard box material
  • Masking tape or transparent tape
  • Metric ruler (centimeters)
  • Scissors - large size
  • Sharp pencil or pointed ball point pen
  • Straw, pencil, or wooden dowel for sounding rod
  • Utility or Xacto-type knife (optional)
  • White glue or craft glue
