S onar is a really cool technology that uses sound waves to measure distance. In this section you will learn about sound and how to use sonar to locate a missing container in the Chesapeake Bay. Click on “Locating Container” below to get started. Then, return to an earlier era, 1607, and use your knowledge of “Sounding the Depths” to make a bathymetric chart and find a safe channel up Powhatan’s River. Investigate how Sonar has been used in "Mapping the Ocean Floor" and identifying features of the Continental Shelf and deep ocean. Good luck and happy hunting!
